Overview

Think you’ve been to Mexico if you’ve been to Cabo, Cancun or Puerto Vallarta? Wrong. The real Mexico is more hidden; it’s not found on a popular beach or in a high-rise tourist-flooded hotel zone. Mexico is like a lot of shy but brilliant people. She holds onto her secrets, only revealing them when you spend the time to get to know her. Experience both the spiritual, the sensual and the mystical found in the “real Mexico” as we begin our escape enhanced by the gentle guiding hand of a famous floral designer. What better way to delay the craziness and over-wrought aspect of the holidays than to take a week for yourself surrounded by beauty, design and blossoms. In late November / early December, Mexico is awash in blooms and greenery in the Valle de Bravo and Tepozetlan areas, two resort towns within a short drive of Mexico City. We’ll wind up our adventure in majestic Mexico City, where we’ll focus on great art, architecture and stellar gourmet food.

Highlights Include:

  • Learn an entirely new method of arranging and growing organic flowers from one of the very best
  • Forage on a meditative forest walk
  • Dine at a Hacienda
  • Experience an authentic Mexican market
  • Shop till you drop at the artisanal craft markets
  • Stay in three unique design hotels that will bring calm and comfort to your entire being
  • Explore a House Museum in Cuernavaca which oozes charm and design-know how
  • Visit one of the most iconic pieces of architecture in Mexico that you’ve never heard of
  • Savor local favorites like red turkey mole, pumpkin flower quesadillas, thin tamales and itacates
  • Tour one of the most incredible and newest Modern Art museums in Mexico
  • Take a walking and tasting tour in CDMX with a culinary expert

Mexico’s climate in late November is picture perfect vacillating comfortably between 70 and 79 (23 celsius). We’ll be lucky enough to enjoy the guidance of two very special women, one who is a travel and food writer and another who is quietly revolutionizing the floral design field. Doni Belau, founder of GG2P will be alongside  to pamper you silly!

Itinerary

Day 1 – Wednesday, Nov 30th, 2022

We’ll begin our adventure by arriving mid-day to the Mexico City Airport. A driver will whisk you and the group away to a lush garden of Eden.

Upon arrival at Valle de Bravo we’ll check into LA CASA RODAVENTRO and enjoy some tea by the lake.

Then we’ll head over to La Musa de Las Flores, a paradise for those who love flowers. Gabrielle the owner and founder is from Mexico but lived in England for 5 years. Her’s is one of the most followed Instagram accounts focused on flowers. She is a teacher of gardening and floristry, but what’s most important is the way she does it. She believes in mindfulness flower arranging. She teaches home enthusiasts and florists alike but when they take her classes, they finish with lessons that are much more fulfilling than simply creating a beautiful arrangement.

We’ll meet with Gabrielle and she’ll tour us around her cut flower garden and then we’ll relax with a glass of wine in this serene environment. November is a prolific blooming season….so prepare for an explosion of color and unique blooms. Nothing she plants is ordinary.

She’ll explain to us what we’ll be doing together for the next few days and after we’ll head back to our hotel for a relaxing meal overlooking the lake.

Day 2 – Dec 1st Thursday

You’ll wake up in your gorgeous hotel room which feels suspended in a forest and meet for breakfast. Then we’ll meet up again with Gabrielle.

We’ll take a walk in the forest and the surrounding countryside to forage for items for our bouquets.

We’ll enjoy a health lunch at one of her favorite local places up in the mountains. In the afternoon, we’ll learn from Gabrielle how to arrange the unique flowers that she’s grown organically with whatever foraged  items we find in a mindful manner. We’ll be able to take our flower arrangements back to our hotel so we can admire our creations over the next few days.

Tonight, we’ll celebrate our new-found artistry as well as our respect for nature with a jubilant meal at Casa Avandaro, one of the best restaurants in the region.

Day 3 – December 2, Friday

Today we’ll meet up for one last mindful workshop from Gabrielle where we’ll learn how to make a centerpiece with meaning and style to grace your next event.

The afternoon will be spent at leisure allowing for time to shop in town and to rest and relax back at our hotel.

Tonight we’ll meet up one final time … shhh its a surprise.

Day 4 – December 3, Saturday

After breakfast, we’ll check out and drive about 3 hours to Tepozetlan, a Pueblo Magico (magic village), which like Valle de Bravo, is a resort town. This small but alluring village outside of Cuernavaca is known for the small pyramid at the top of a nearby hill dedicated to OmetochtliTepoztēcatl, the guru of pulque, a beer-like drink made from the maguey plant. The pyramid, called El Tepozteco, dates from 1452.

Upon arrival, we’ll check into our hotel for the next two nights, Casa Fernanda. After unpacking, we’ll take a short walk around town to get acclimated and then we’ll have free time for shopping or luxuriating in the hotel’s spa. Tonight’s meal will be scrumptious, taking place at the hotel’s outdoor restaurant where you’ll enjoy their cocktail menu as well as their excellent list of local Mexican wines (don’t knock them until you’ve tried … there are some absolutely delicious wines produced in Mexico now).

Day 5 – December 4, Sunday

Sunday is market day in Tepozetlan. The region is known for its handicrafts including their artisanal weaving, pottery and baskets. Of course, we’ll be tasting our way through the market as well trying red turkey mole, pumpkin flower quesadillas, thin tamales and itacates. These are a local favorite – buttered corncakes with salsa, sour cream and cheese. We’ll wash it all down with a sampling of pulque, naturally!

This afternoon we’ll head over to Cuernavaca which is only a 40-minute drive west. Cuernavaca is the city of Eternal Spring.

We’ll decamp to the Robert Brady House Museum dedicated to the owner who was a poet, writer and collector. He was born in Iowa, lived in Venice and then traveled the world collecting art and artifacts before settling down in the 16th century monastery in the 1960’s.

After our visit we’ll pop over to Chapel of the Third Order of San Francisco which is pink! Life may not always be a walk in the park, but after going to church, we’ll take an actual walk in the Jardín Juárez park, complete with a gazebo designed by Gustav Eiffel. This afternoon, we’ll have some free time for shopping at the nearby craft markets and discovering the Palacio de Cortes from 1521 with its Diego Rivera murals on your own. We’ll meet up again for a drink on the Zocalo (main square) and then head off to dinner.

Tonight, we will dine luxuriously at a nearby Hacienda in regal style. On Sunday’s they often have paella and suckling pig from Spain.

Day 6 December 5th, Monday

This morning we’ll check out and drive up to Mexico City where we will check into the charming and hip Pug Seal hotel in the Polanco neighborhood, known as the Beverly Hills of Mexico City.

This afternoon after unpacking we’ll head over to the Soumaya museum known for its huge collection of Rodin sculptures as well as paintings and other works dating from Mesoamerica to modern day. The architecture is as fascinating and thrilling as the museum itself. Time to rest and relax this afternoon.

Dinner tonight will be in a mansion in the Roma neighborhood, a place that is on everyone’s best restaurant list for Mexico City as well as being one of the most picturesque.

Day 7 December 6th, Tuesday

Today is devoted to art and architecture.

We’ll head first to Casa Luis Barragan, one of the most iconic pieces of mid-century Mexican architecture around – a building way before its time. Built in 1948 it is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture from an international point of view and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Since it’s gift-buying season we’ll head over to Downtown, a contemporary mall inside a century’s old mansion in the city’s historic section. All of its tiny boutique stores offer handcrafted items all made in Mexico. Everything here is gorgeous.

After shopping we’ll throw our bags in our chauffeured van and enjoy a walking and tasting tour around the neighborhood with a GG2P friend and local guide, Isabel.

We will head over to close out our day to the Frida Kahlo Casa Azul house and museum, a pilgrimage every woman must make while in CDMX.

Tonight, we’ll take in the lights of the Zocalo (central square) and the 500-year-old cathedral as we dine in style and toast to a wonderful week absorbing the real Mexico at the Balcon de Zocalo. At the end of our meal, we’ll toast to new friends made and repeat this Mexican saying Barriga llena, Corazón content which means full stomach, happy heart.
