Day 1 – May 26, Wednesday
Arrive and check into the well located 4-star James Boutique Hotel in Colmar where you’ll be staying for your first two nights. Transfers from Strasbourg will be available.
Late this afternoon we’ll trip the old town of Colmar with a guide and then we’ll trip the expansive and impressive food market picking up a snack or two en route.
We‘ll meet again in the lobby around 7pm after having some time to refresh, unpack and relax. We’ll have a short get-to-know-you session over drinks discussing what adventures are in store for the week. Then we’ll head out for a local meal at the Wistub Brenner, where we’ll feel properly welcomed to Alsace!
Day 2 – May 26, Thursday
This morning after breakfast at our hotel we’ll meet our guide in Colmar around 9:30 am. We’ll head out to visit the WWI Memorial Museum in Le Linge, including the battle fields and trenches with our knowledgeable guide. Here we’ll learn a little bit about the complex history of the Alsace region.
Afterwe’ll explore the charming village of Kaysersberg with our local guide Benoit. Afterwards we’ll savor a wine tasting with lunch with a well-known female vintner. In late afternoon we’ll head back to Colmar for some rest and relaxation and to shop and explore on your own.
Tonight, we’ll enjoy a meal of Flammekueche in the darling village of Eguisheim which is nearby delicious Alsatian-style Pizza with some local beer.
Day 3 – May 27, Friday
Today we depart for Freiburg, Germany where we’ll stay for the following two nightsat the Hotel Columbie.
Freiburg is where Katrin, my co-host and colleague has spent many of her days. Upon arrival we’ll visit the market in town and after Katrin will show us some of her favorite shops in this small but terribly charming and sophisticated German town.
We’ll sample some of the best German cakes and pastries opting for a lighter lunch on the go today.
This afternoon we’ll head back to our hotel to unpack and settle in for a moment of relaxation. Or perhaps you’d prefer to head out to shop and explore on your own.
Tonight,we’ll be sampling some local German delicacies at an historic beer garden.
Day 4- May 28, Saturday
As today is market day in Freiburg, Katrin will take us for a trip of the market followed by the main cathedral which dates back to 1200 – both are situated on the picturesque central square.
We’ll picnic in town on what we’ve found at the market and once satiated we’ll stop at the Coo-coo clock place in case you want to bring back the most classic of all German Souvenirs. Laterwe’ll stop in for a local wine tasting.
During your free time this afternoon you may want to visit the Augustiner Museum, home to an impressive collection of paintings from the middle ages as well as the Baroque period.
This evening we’ll dine on the best pork/veal Schnitzel you’veever tasted. (Choices for vegetarians are available)
Day 5 – May 29, Sunday
After breakfast we’ll head out to visit a white asparagus farm and learn how this delicacy is grown. It’s the season!
Then we’ll head up into the mountains and check-into our luxurious spa hotel, Die Halde, which we can reach via gondola (while others take our luggage via auto). This afternoon will be spent enjoying a massage or other treatment, one of which is included in trip. A nice lunch will be had, hopefully outside on the terrace depending on the weather. This afternoon is at leisure with an optional walk led by Katrin.
We’ll meet in the bar for drinks this evening for a discussion with Sheri Salata, our guest of honor, about her book the Beautiful No discussing her theory on the 8 pillars of happiness. Everyone on the trip will be gifted a copy.
Finally,we’ll enjoy a sumptuous meal with wine at our hotel.
Day 6 – May 30, Monday
Today, en-route to Basel, we’ll stop at the Vitra design museum with a campus full of architect designed buildings by the likes of Gehry, Tando Ando etc.
We shall lunch along the way and delight in a Schnapps tasting before we arrive to Basel where we will check-in to the delightful and beautifully designed Krafft Hotel overlooking the Rhine river.
In Basel itself, we’ll hit up the Beyeler Foundation designed by Renzo Piano, one of the most important museums in Europe.
Tonight, we’ll dine on some Swiss classics in central Basel.
Day 7 – May 31, Tuesday
Today after breakfast we’ll enjoy a lovely boat ride along the Rhine River.
Then we’ll take a short trip of the Old Town with a stop into the ancient cathedral of Basel built over 1000 years ago.
Free time this afternoon: Optional Visit to the Kunstmusem with its collection of old masters through to contemporary artists. Or you can spend time on your own shopping and exploring Basel.
We’ll dine this evening at a grand yet charming Swiss classic and celebrate our wonderful week together treasuring the lasting friendships we’ve made.
Day 8 – June 1, Wednesday

Transfers will take you to the Mulhouse/Basel airport or the train station.
As a treat for all of us on this trip, we have a very special guest joining us. Sheri Salata was Oprah’s right-hand gal for 20+ years finishing as her Executive Producer during the final season of the show as well as the lady boss who co-launched the OWN Network. Ms. Salata recently wrote the book “A Beautiful NO!” about her life’s adventures on the Oprah show as well as her trials and tribulations in maintaining a work life balance. In short, this book is an uplifting adventure into her fascinating world with a focus on what she outlines as the 8 Cornerstones to a Happy Life. It’s at once a biography and a guide to how to get your own LIFE together in what she calls our “middle years” (she just turned 60).This is a book that every single woman over 40 should read and the good news is, she’s going to be sending it to every lady on this trip as your gift along with a workbook and companion guide. PLUS, she’ll be giving us a little Rhine-side chat about her life with Oprah (questions welcome) and later at the spa we’ll discuss our wellness triumphs and challenges. I’m so thrilled she’s going to be joining us.
