With his creation in 1852 of the first department store, le Bon Marché, Aristide Boucicaut ensured that shopping in Paris was leading the world. In 1923 the store took up residence in its fabulously elegant building at the corner of rue de Sèvres and rue du Bac. It is a huge treat to visit, and along with places like Marshall Field’s in Chicago, was part of the early-19th-century revolution in grand stores.

Valentine’s Day Must-Do’s in Paris

Le Saint-Valentin. It even sounds sexy in French, and this year I am dreaming up a particularly sexy Valentine’s Day in Paris. My dream begins with waking up in a luxurious hotel, like le Pavillon de la Reine, located under the arcades of the quintessentially romantic Place des Vosges. After a decadent breakfast in bed, wearing Monsieur’s dress shirt from the night before, I’d put on some tight jeans, with a large cashmere boyfriend sweater, and some decent boots that have heels that I can actually walk in. Then, we’d head out the door to celebrate Valentine’s Day with romantic must-do’s in Paris.

Purely Paris: Happy Birthday, Bon Marché!

This year le Bon Marché celebrates 160 years as a Paris fashion mecca. Such a special event even has a muse of its own: the iconic actress Catherine Deneuve. Deneuve has chosen her ten favorite left bank haunts, which the store has transformed into quirky windows. Created by cartoonist Marjane Satrapi of Persepolis fame, these look like leaves out of a children’s pop-up book. “Paris is the world,” says Satrapi, “and, to me, Catherine is the world of Paris.” The windows stay in place through October 27.
