Girl Talk with Caroline Nin, French Chanson Artist

Is French chanson dead? Not according to Caroline Nin, who is thriving and singing around the world in the French chanson tradition (think Edith Piaf). I had a chance to catch up with Caroline in between her gigs and chat about music and Paris.

Girl Talk with Agnès Catherine Poirier

Of all the writers trying to decode Parisian women, few succeed with the insight of journalist Agnès Catherine Poirier. Brought up in Paris’s 12th Arrondissement, Poirier studied at the Sorbonne and Sciences-Po as well as at the London School of Economics. Her first book, Les Nouveaux Anglais, caused a sensation—one echoed by the publication, in English, of Touché, a book about how it feels to be a parisienne outside of France.

Girl Talk with Mireille Guiliano

Mireille Guiliano’s life has been devoted to representing both French women and French luxury. Marriage to a US CEO (of the New York Institute of Technology) brought her from Paris to New York. There she helped found Clicquot, Inc., the US importer of Veuve Clicquot champagne; she also became a senior executive at luxury conglomerate LVMH. Her work life has always combined high pressure and continuous travel.

Girl Talk with Catherine Deneuve

When you meet Catherine Deneuve, there is a moment of silence, a stunned awe as you absorb her alluring beauty that simultaneously is so perfect and so mysterious. I was interviewing her for a newspaper and she greeted me with a practiced smile. To shake things up, I offered to speak in French instead of English.

Girl Talk with Yasmine Tarasewicz

Yasmine Tarasewicz has been described to me, by a friend who knows her well, as the quintessential chic Parisian woman—plus, she’s a high-powered attorney and partner at Proskauer in Paris. Oh, and did I mention that her two homes have been profiled in decor magazines? One home is in Paris, the other on the Île de Ré, the Hamptons of France. She is charming, smart, has spectacular taste and is killer in the courtroom. We are terribly impressed.

The Best-Kept Boutique Secret in Paris

With all the famous Paris shops and avenues, it’s hard to know where to find something unique. Where does one go for the off-the-beaten-path treasures? Over time some friends have shared their secret locations with me, places they love and can’t live without, and I’m proud to say that I now have my own! While most of my friends prefer to keep their shops to themselves to avoid throngs of people stealing their “it” dresses, shoes and decorative pieces, I can’t wait to tell you about my place.

Talking Paris Apartments with Kathryn Lynden

I love real estate, especially real estate in Paris. I’ve bought and sold a place in Paris and now own a place near Bordeaux, and if I could I’d buy and fix up many more houses and apartments around the globe. It’s my second passion, right behind travel. So it’s only natural that I’d meet Kathryn Lynden, who like me is from the American Midwest, and who with a partner or two has bought 50-plus homes around the world, fixed them up and sold them as “fractionals.” I’ve come to understand that the fractional system is unlike the time-share concept, and in this particular case much more luxurious and a much better deal, especially with Paris prices on the rise. In fact she has three apartments that she has done in Paris, and of course I simply had to know more.

Girl Talk with Elizabeth Bard

A few months ago all I was hearing was Lunch in Paris, Lunch in Paris—it seemed everyone who was anyone was reading Lunch in Paris: A Love Story, with Recipes, by Elizabeth Bard. As usual I was a bit behind on my reading, but I launched into it finally (and appropriately) on my most recent trip to France, several weeks ago.

Girl Talk with Sophie Vigouroux

I ran into Sophie Vigouroux at the France Show, London’s annual Francophile expo, in January. This lovely young French woman inspired me because she and a team of smart folks started a new mobile phone service for Transatel meant to help people like me and so many others who travel often to France. I love meeting women (especially women from Paris) who’ve done something exciting in business or in life all on their own.

Girl Talk with Pamela Boulet

Like so many women who end up in Paris, Pamela Boulet went for work and stayed for love. What was supposed to last just a few months ended up as a 20-year stint, and with two children and a French husband, it seems she won’t be coming home anytime soon. Pamela has the kind of job so many women I know would kill for. She sells high-end fashion via trunk shows all over the world. Flitting from Southampton to Hong Kong, she sells the designs of Andrew Gn to the international fashionista set.
