Le 39V opened last fall, one of a handful of higher-end places to appear, a welcome flash of bling in this age of austerity.

There is no old world charm in this Paris restaurant. This is a slick and sleek address, black and chrome, perched on the roof of the Sony building, just off the Champs Elysées.

Aux Lyonnais

Lyon is an easy trip from Paris: the TGV will get you there in about two hours. But for a taste of Lyon without leaving town, there’s Aux Lyonnais. Open since 1890, the restaurant is now part of Alain Ducasse’s Esprit Bistrot group. The room is gorgeous, a warm belle epoque space, with ornate molding and mirrors, filled with the kind of bright, buttery light that seems to exist only in Paris. The pink-and-white-checked tablecloths, though, remind you that the inspiration here comes from the famous bouchons of Lyon.

Where better to spend the afternoon than at the fabulous Hôtel Plaza Athénée, where I was lucky enough to be given a tour of the public areas as well as the wine cellar, kitchens and chic accommodations thanks to Travel Onion. Let’s put it this way: this Paris hotel is not too shabby! Julie Hong from Sales and Aude Bourgouin from Press Relations hosted our little tour party and introduced us to the directrice of the hotel, Laurence Bloch, who was just so nice and approachable.
