Paris Dining: Les Pipelettes

The 14th Arrondissement tends to fall off the Paris dining map, with the 9th, 10th, 11th or the 17th and 18th up north grabbing all the attention with new openings. But it is a charming district just a hop away from the […]

Rump steak and faux filet at Le Severo, a Paris bistro in the 14th Arrondissement that specializes in steak frites

Le Severo

When people ask me where to go for steak frites, Le Severo is where I send them. This Paris bistro, in a quiet residential area of the 14th Arrondissement, is run by William Bernet, a former butcher who honors the quality of his steaks by cooking them very well.

Steak frites at Le Relais de l'Entrecôte, which dishes out delish steak and fries to locals and tourists alike in locations all over Paris

Le Relais de l’Entrecôte

“Quelle cuisson?” (“How do you want your steak cooked?”) is the only question they ask at Le Relais de l’Entrecôte, which I would call a mill if I didn’t like it so much. Oh, who am I kidding. It’s totally a mill. And I love it.

Le Relais de l’Entrecôte belongs to a group that has three Paris addresses, plus outposts in Geneva and (sigh) Dubai, that serve nothing but steak and fries. I’m still not sure if it’s a Paris restaurant or a Paris-themed restaurant, but I’m also not sure I care.

Purely Paris: Fantastic Cakes at a Paris Patisserie

At Chez Bogato, the name says it all (“Bogato” is pronounced like beaux gâteaux, meaning “handsome cakes”). Everything in this charming Paris patisserie adds to its main draw—which is some of the most creative cakes in town. You’ll see cooking tools, toys, recipe books and gifts, both for cooks and everyone in their families. The irresistible draw, however, is a range of treats that are miniversions of the shop’s grandest offerings.

La Régalade Saint-Honoré

The original La Régalade became well known under the ownership of Yves Camdeborde, whose career was one of many ships launched by Christian Constant. Instead of continuing in the galleys of haute cuisine, Camdeborde took his formidable talent to the next-to-last stop on metro line 4 and opened a bistro serving seasonally minded, generous food at gentle prices. He sold it to chef Bruno Doucet in 2004, but La Régalade has never stopped drawing praise, and foodies have never stopped making the pilgrimage to this early bastion of bistronomy.

Breizh Café

Every time I visit this place and bite into one of their savory buckwheat galettes, nutty and crisp on the edges, I kick myself for not eating there more often. “Breizh” means “Brittany” in the Breton language (and it is a language, not a dialect of French), and the menu here is a culinary treasure chest of the region. Oysters from the coast, charcuterie from the land, cider from the apple trees and, of course, butter.

Christophe

Tucked behind the Pantheon, Christophe is a culinary bright spot in a Paris neighborhood full of student bars, kebab shops, tourist traps and mediocre Italian places.

It’s not a new restaurant, but for some reason people have been talking about it recently. I read about it on one of my favorite French food […]

Jeu de Quilles

Ever since my friend relocated to the 14th Arrondissement, he’s been telling me we should eat at Jeu de Quilles. I wish we’d gone sooner.

It’s the kind of space that never fails to charm me. At the front of the bright little room are shelves lined with conserves and condiments, a tiny épicerie that is also chef Benoît Reix’s pantry. He stands behind the kitchen counter at the back, in plain view of the 18 or so seats, chatting with customers and turning out fantastic food.
