Overview

In the fall of 2020, we’ve planned an incredible, authentic Burgundian experience. The setting is what will thrill and amaze you. Imagine biking along the canal, tasting some of the world’s best wines, picking flowers and arranging them, doing a cooking class, luxuriating at a spa and eating a 2 Michelin star meal. All of this will be headquartered out of a storybook 18th Castle/Chateau with a moat. If this kind of luxurious slow-travel appeals to you, read on.

Highlights

  • Staying in a private Castle with a moat
  • Exploring the Hospices de Beaune
  • Taking a Burgundian cooking class
  • Sampling a myriad of local Burgundian wines of all types
  • Picnicking along the Burgundian Canal
  • Visiting Medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois
  • Savoring a Michelin star meal
  • Relaxing at a stunning spa
  • Visiting Johnny Depp’s Village in the movie Chocolat
  • Playing a game of croquet on the lawn of your “own chateau” with Kir in hand

We’ll be staying at a proper Castle with a moat and several turrets. The home of the Hawkes family dates back to the 1700’s and we’ll learn from Madame and Monsieur precisely what it’s like to live in a vrai French castle. We’ll explore their potager vegetable garden, pick flowers from their extensive flower gardens and follow Monsieur’s tutorial on how to set the table and arrange the kind of flower displays that will suit a Chateau. Needless to say we’ll be heading to Beaune and Chablis for wine tastings, we’ll visit a stunning walled Medieval Town, go to the local market and learn from and taste with local cheese producers. We shall picnic by the famous Burgundian canals and end our stay at a 5* hotel and spa, with a treatment included.

Itinerary

Day 1 – September 8, Wednesday

Arrive to the Chateau via train from Paris. Meet our Chateau hosts and learn about the history of the Chateau with our welcome cocktails and gougères. (Typical Burgundian savory cheese pastry). We’ll head out to a local French Gourmet meal and discuss the week to come.

Day 2 – September 9, Thursday

Today we’ll go to the local market and buy goods for our picnic lunch. Sound fun? After the market visit we’ll venture out to explore the Burgundy canal where we’ll have a chance to ride bikes and enjoy our picnic, canal side.

This afternoon, back at the Chateau, we’ll enjoy a potager trip (the vegetable garden) and participate in a short cooking class where we’ll learn some of the secrets to Burgundian cuisine. We’ll head back outside to walk through the flower gardens, picking as we go with the Master of the Chateau. This will be followed by a short flower arranging class as well as instruction on how he prefers to set the table to represent both the French and English style. The owners are in fact English. Tonight we’ll enjoy the fruits of our labors with a sumptuous and typical Burgundian meal with local wines dining in the Chateau’s grand dining room.

Day 3 – September 10, Friday

Bright and early today we’ll head north towards Beaune. Here we’ll explore the gorgeous Hospices de Beaune and then we’ll delight in a wine-tasting with lunch at a local winery.

This afternoon we’ll explore a famous mustard factory and then enjoy a pastry tasting with an award wining pastry chef.

We’ll have a light meal tonight before retiring back to our very own castle for the night dreaming of counts and princesses from the days of yore.

 Day 4 – September 11, Saturday

Today we’ll have a chance to explore the local environs. We’ll take a trail walk to visit some local producers and if time allows we’ll visit the Chateau de Mont Saint Jean.

We’ll have lunch at the Chateau, outside if the weather allows.

In the afternoon we’ll visit the Medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois where we will trip the old Chateau and then head back to our chateau to enjoy a game of croquet and a glass of kir.

Tonight we’ll dine nearby the Chateau in a small medieval village where we’ve found a chef who specializes in hyper-local market driven ingredients.

Day 5 – September 12, Sunday

This morning we’ll head out to visit the small quaint village where Johnny Depp’s Chocolat was filmed, then we’ll visit an historic Abbey founded in the 12th century complete with formal gardens.

We’ll take a little break today from French food and feast on Vietnamese for our dejeuner today. Then we’ll head to the storied village of Chablis with its centuries old producers. We’ll have a tasting lesson with multiple local chablis wines in order to discern which we prefer.

On the way back to the Chateau we’ll stop at a lovely Auberge for dinner.

Day 6 – September 13, Monday

On our last day we’ll head to the nearby village of Saulieu to relax and be pampered at their award winning spa by Bernard Loiseau. We shall lunch in style at their 2 Michelin star restaurant.

This afternoon will be free for lazing about the Chateau, taking walks or reading books overlooking the beautiful Serein valley.

Tonight we’ll enjoy a final elegant wine tasting with a selection of French tapas. We will toast to new friendships and memories which shall last a lifetime.
