Auberge Flora

I’ve always had a special place in my heart for women chefs. While there are certainly a growing number of celebrated top toques of the female persuasion, it’s still a fairly male-centric culinary world. So when I heard that accomplished chef Florence Mikula opened her third Paris restaurant, I knew I had to go check it out.

Mikula previously owned and operated Parisian staples Les Olivades and the now-defunct Les Saveurs de Flora...

I love tapas. I don’t know if that means I’m a bit fickle, since I’d rather eat a little bit of everything than one of the same thing in any restaurant in Paris—or in or out of Spain, for that matter. I prefer to think it means I love food so much that I want to sample as many different things as I can. Whether you’re fickle or not, Afaria offers a perfect dining experience with a Basque-inspired tapas...

Basking in the French Basque Country

Recently I was lucky enough to venture en famille to the glorious Basque region of France. The town in the area that you might have heard of is Biarritz, but having been there previously, and not having loved it, we decided to stay near Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Saint-Jean—or Luz, as some of the locals call it—is just 10 minutes south of the fading glory of Biarritz and infinitely more adorable and charming. It’s a village filled with white stucco buildings with red roofs and red shutters unique to the Basque region. Actually, they are a shade of burned red; you might call the color bordeaux, but we are two hours south of Bordeaux here and on the Atlantic Ocean. Saint-Jean is a wonderful walking town, as most of its key shopping streets are closed off to cars and the harbor is terribly picturesque....

While I sometimes think there are too many restaurants in Paris, not all of them worthy, I can’t say there are too many wine bars in Paris. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no such thing. You need one for every mood. Sometimes you’d like to spend the evening sampling different food and wine pairings. Sometimes you just want to meet for a drink and a snack before a late dinner. And sometimes you don’t want the night to end, and you need a place for casual after-dinner drinks....

The newest spot in town, the W Hotel, brought the crème de la crème of all my favorite regions of the world together under one roof at the new Restaurant Arola, named after the Catalan chef-owner, Sergi Arola. This Paris restaurant fuses a chic New York ambience with Catalan tapas and platillos while adding a touch of Parisian flair to the...

Mojita & Bob

I was looking to reconnect with some friends last weekend after we had all been traveling and running in different directions. It was Friday morning and we hadn’t made a plan for the night yet. We didn’t feel like an elaborate, multicourse French bistro dining experience, but a takeout crêpe wasn’t going to cut it either. That’s when we decided to try out Mojita & Bob, a Spanish tapas restaurant and bar on the trendy rue...

Dans les Landes

Julien Duboué of the bistro Afaria, in the 15th Arrondissement, has brought his southwestern cooking to the 5th, dressed it down and fried it up, and the result is one of the best tapas and wine bars in Paris.

This place is best enjoyed with a group around one of the high communal tables. The small plates...

Anyone frustrated by the difficulty of getting a reservation at Le Chateaubriand will be pleased to know that there is now another way to get a taste of Iñaki Aizpitarte’s cooking, right next door at Le Dauphin.

That it’s a Chateaubriand offshoot was enough to guarantee that there would be buzz...

Aux Deux Amis

“A real neighborhood place,” I kept hearing a man say at the table next to us, at Aux Deux Amis, and he’s right. But this can have wildly different meanings, depending on the neighborhood. In this case it’s Oberkampf, lively and mixed, with plenty of unglazed...
